Childcare near Taylors Hill, Hillside, Delahey and Caroline Springs: what local families should know

Key takeaways

Start looking 6 to 12 months before you need care, earlier for babies or a January start.

Compare centres on the full cost, including meals, nappies and excursions, not just the daily fee.

When kinder runs inside long day care, you enrol with the centre, and your child keeps one drop-off.

A centre on your commute route usually beats the one that is closest on the map.

Where we are

Close to Watergardens and the suburbs around it

Our Sydenham centre is at 5-7 Pecks Rd, Sydenham, moments from Watergardens. As a rough guide, it is usually a few minutes' drive from Hillside, Taylors Hill and Delahey, and often around 10 to 15 minutes from Caroline Springs or Keilor Downs, depending on where you start and the time of day.

Which route suits you

  • Heading into the city by train: Watergardens station on the Sydenham line is close by, so you can drop off and keep going.
  • Driving towards the Calder Freeway or Western Ring Road: Pecks Road sits close to both, so the centre is on the way rather than a detour.
  • Working locally or from home: being near Watergardens makes pick-up easy to combine with errands.

The centre has easy parking, which matters more than people expect when you are juggling a capsule, a nappy bag and a toddler who wants to walk in on their own. Families further south-west, around Tarneit or Point Cook, are usually better suited to our Hoppers Crossing centre.

Getting a place

When to start looking

Established centres in this area often have more families asking than places free, especially for babies and for the start of the year. Starting early gives you choice over which days you get, rather than taking whatever is left.

A simple timeline

  • 6 to 12 months before: shortlist two or three centres and book tours.
  • As soon as you have chosen: enquire and tell the centre exactly which days and start date you need.
  • If your days are not free: ask what is likely to open up and when, and whether a different day combination would get you in sooner.
  • 4 to 8 weeks before starting: book orientation visits and make sure your Child Care Subsidy claim is in with Services Australia.

Sydenham is a well-established centre and places can be limited. If your preferred days are not free straight away, ask us about upcoming availability. Book a tour or enquire about Sydenham.

Real costs

Compare the full cost, not just the daily fee

Two centres with similar daily fees can cost very different amounts once you add what you supply yourself. When you compare, ask each centre the same questions so you are comparing like with like.

Questions to ask every centre

  • Are all meals included, or do you pack lunch and snacks?
  • Are nappies, wipes and sunscreen provided?
  • Are excursions and incursions included, or charged separately?
  • Is there an enrolment or registration fee?
  • How are absences and public holidays charged?
  • What hours does the daily session cover? This affects how the Child Care Subsidy is calculated.

At Sydenham, long day care is $152 a day before the Child Care Subsidy, and it is all-inclusive: five freshly prepared meals cooked on site, nappies, wipes and sunscreen, monthly excursions, and in-centre incursions such as Hey Dee Ho and Alphatykes.

Since January 2026, every family eligible for the Child Care Subsidy can get at least three days of subsidised care a week under the 3 Day Guarantee. Using the example family in that guide, on an 80% subsidy rate, a $152 day works out at about $30 out of pocket, or around $91 for three days a week. That is an illustration only; your rate depends on your family income. Our CCS calculator gives you your own estimate.

Kinder

Funded kinder without a second drop-off

Many families plan for kinder separately, then find themselves juggling a short sessional kinder and childcare in two places. When kinder runs inside long day care, the funded program happens during your child's normal day, in the centre they already know.

At Sydenham, Victorian Government funded 3 and 4-year-old kindergarten is led by a qualified kindergarten teacher, with 7.5-hour program days. Both age groups can choose Monday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday. You enrol with us directly, and the funded kinder hours sit inside the long day care day. Our guides to Free Kinder and starting kinder in Victoria explain the ages and timing.

Sydenham also runs a Montessori preschool program, with child-led, hands-on learning from calm, open shelving, delivered within the Early Years Learning Framework.

A typical day

What a day at Sydenham looks like

  • 6:30am: doors open, with breakfast for early arrivals.
  • 9:30am: planned learning in each room, including the funded kinder program.
  • 10:30am: cooked morning tea, then outdoor play in the shaded playgrounds.
  • 12:00pm: hot lunch, cooked on site.
  • 1:00pm: sleep for younger children, quiet activities for older ones.
  • 3:00pm: afternoon tea, projects and incursions.
  • 5:00pm to 6:30pm: quieter play, stories and pick-up, with the day shared on Storypark.

Each month children also head out on an excursion, to places like Scienceworks, Melbourne Zoo, farms, parks and museums. Our guide to how excursions support confident learners explains why we think they matter.

Settling in

Making the first week easier

Sydenham is our original centre. For more than seven years it has cared for local children, many of them younger siblings of children we looked after years ago, and many of our educators have been with us a long time. Seeing the same faces each day is one of the biggest things that helps a child settle.

What helps in the first week

  • Book one or two orientation visits before the first full day.
  • Start with shorter days if your work allows, then build up.
  • Keep goodbyes short and warm, and always say goodbye rather than slipping out.
  • Pack two sets of spare clothes, a hat and a comfort item from home, all labelled. Meals, nappies, wipes and sunscreen are already provided.
  • Tell educators about your child's sleep, feeding and comfort routines so they can keep them familiar.

On the tour

What to look for when you visit

  • How educators speak to children, and whether children go to them easily.
  • Whether the rooms feel calm and organised, with play set up for children to choose from.
  • The outdoor space: shade, room to climb and run, and how often children are outside.
  • How long the educators have been there. Ask directly; low turnover is a good sign.
  • How you will hear about your child's day.

Our list of questions to ask on a childcare tour goes further. You can book a Sydenham tour online and pick a time that suits you.
